How to respond to Google reviews as an auto repair shop

By Morrowpeak · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Reply to every Google review within one business day, good or bad. Thank the customer by name, mention the actual repair, and keep it to two or three sentences. For a negative review, apologize if the shop was at fault, keep any explanation short, don’t argue, and give a name to call so you can fix it offline.

Why replying matters for a repair shop

Most customers read your reviews before they call, and they read your replies too. In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults, 89% said they expect business owners to respond to reviews, and 42% said they’re unlikely to use a business that never replies.

Google lists responding to reviews among its tips for improving local ranking, noting that replies show you value your customers’ feedback.

How to reply to a 5-star review

  • Use the customer’s first name.
  • Mention the specific repair or vehicle from the review.
  • Keep it to two or three sentences.
  • End with something that fits your shop, like seeing them at the next service.
5-star review

“Fast, honest and fair. Had my Civic’s AC fixed the same day.”

Reply

Thanks, Maria. Glad we could get the Civic’s AC blowing cold the same day, just in time for the heat. See you at your next oil change.

How to reply to a negative review

  • Reply within one business day, calmly.
  • If the shop was at fault, apologize plainly.
  • Keep any explanation to one sentence. Long explanations read as excuses.
  • Don’t argue or share the customer’s invoice, phone number or other details.
  • Give a name and invite them to call so you can make it right offline.
2-star review, shop at fault

“Waited two days for a call back about my estimate.”

Reply

Kevin, you should have heard back the same day, and I apologize that you didn’t. Please call and ask for Mike. He’ll go over your estimate with you today.

1-star review about price

“Way too expensive for brakes.”

Reply

Thanks for the feedback, James. We quote OEM-grade pads and rotors and walk every customer through the estimate before we start. I’d be glad to go over your invoice line by line. Call and ask for Dana.

What to do about a review that seems unfair

Reply once, briefly and politely, for the people reading it later. Something like: “We can’t find a record of your visit, but we’d like to look into this. Please call and ask for the manager.” If the review breaks Google’s content policies, report it from your Business Profile. Owners can’t delete reviews themselves.

How fast should you reply?

Within one business day. In the same BrightLocal survey, 19% of consumers expected a reply the same day and 81% expected one within a week. Half said generic, copy-and-paste replies put them off, so speed only helps if the reply is actually written for that review.

Mistakes that make replies backfire

  • Pasting the same reply under every review.
  • Arguing about who was right.
  • Posting the customer’s invoice amount or personal details.
  • Only answering the bad reviews and ignoring the good ones.
  • Letting reviews sit for weeks, then answering them all at once.

Common questions

Should an auto repair shop reply to every Google review?

Yes. Reply to positive and negative reviews alike. Customers notice when a shop only answers complaints, and a thank-you under a five-star review shows new customers you pay attention.

How long should a reply to a Google review be?

Two or three sentences for most reviews. Negative reviews can be a little longer, but keep any explanation to one sentence and move the conversation to a phone call.

Can I delete a bad Google review?

No. Business owners can’t delete reviews. You can reply to it, and if it breaks Google’s content policies you can report it for removal from your Business Profile.

Can someone else reply to Google reviews for my shop?

Yes. You can add a person or company as a manager on your Google Business Profile. They can reply to reviews for you while you stay the owner, and you can remove them any time.
